The science
The most common cause, in men and women, is genetic pattern hair loss. Here’s what happens in plain words.
In people prone to pattern loss, a hormone called DHT slowly shrinks hair follicles. Each new hair grows back thinner and shorter, until some stop.
Finasteride and dutasteride lower DHT. Spironolactone blocks the hormones that drive thinning in many women. Less signal means less shrinking.
Minoxidil improves blood flow to the follicle and lengthens the growing phase, so hairs grow longer and thicker.
